Sheer Inspiration - 5 Top Tips for Dressing your windows with voile

Dressing your windows using sheers not only looks fabulous in your home but they are immensely practical aswell. They can be used to add privacy to an overlooked window or as sun blockers to take the heat out of a south facing window to protect interior furnishings from the damaging sun. No window is too big or too small for sheers. From huge bay windows , conservatories and patio doors through to tiny bathroom, landing and over the sink kitchen windows- there is a sheer solution for all!  Modern sheers also have fantastic easy care properties. Most are machine washable and can be laundered frequently if required with minimal or no  ironing required.

Here are 5 Top Tips for successful Sheer Window dressing :

Tip 1.  Always go for quality .....

Remember the saying ' you always get what you pay for ' , well this is particularly true with fabric . If its cheap to buy, then the finished effect  will probably look cheap .Often it pays to spend a little more and get quality panels or fabrics that will give you pleasure everytime you look at them, rather than making you wish you hadn't bought them in the first place !

Tip 2.  Be creative ....

Certain windows are crying out to be made the focul point of the room , so rather than going for a boring pair of curtains which blends in to the decor , do something a little different! Compared to the cost of lined curtains , voiles are very inexpensive and you can use them to create a dramatic and unique look that adds real style to your home .

Tip 3.  Be generous with  your sizes

The enemy of gorgeous sheer window dressing is skimpy sizes! Make sure you allow for at least double + the width of the window and use extra wide voile panels wherever possible to achieve a full and luxurious look. If short sheers are required go to the sill , but  if creating a feature window , always go full length to the floor  with your drop, even allowing extra inches for the sheers to 'puddle ' on the floor  where possible .

Tip 4.  Choose the right heading style...

Avoid  sheers with eyelet or ring top headings .These can look cheap and are completely impractical, rendering it impossible to safely launder your sheers without damaging your washing machine or ruining the panels! If possible opt for a Net Pleat or Pencil Pleat heading. This will always look good, function properly and will hang your sheers on most types or tracks and poles .

Tip 5.  Don't be afraid  of colour .....

Voiles and sheers are widely used in hot countries and often in a myriad of dazzling colours to add a contemporary look to a room scheme . Remember sheers in colours  are not solid flat colours, but shimmery , subtle tones and hints of colour which can be used to create a stunning effect in any room of the home
